Exposing Cancer with Ultrasound (written for Portable Ultrasound)
Ultrasound devices are ubiquitous nowadays and can create both two-dimensional and three-dimensional images, and even blood flow rate. The machines are also used in many areas of medicine, including cancer and prenatal care.
Ultrasound machines can also be used to discover tumors in the body. To discover ovarian cancer, for example, ultrasound images show the surface textures of the ovaries and any cysts that may be present. The presence of too much liquid in the pelvic and abdominal areas, nodules in the bowel, and several solid masses also demonstrate the presence of cancer. Sadly, by the time these are seen through ultrasound, the ovarian cancer would be in an late stage.
It is also potential that what the images reveal are not necessarily due to ovarian cancer but to another disorder or condition. So, ultrasound, while effective in discovering unusual shapes or conditions within the body, cannot say without a doubt that what is seen is cancer. And for ovarian cancer, occasionally it will require surgery to confirm that the person does actually have cancer.
